When I was 10 years old, my little brother was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He was 7 years old.
He had been wetting his bed and feeling horrible. My mom thought it was a infection of some sort, so she took him to the doctor and my dad picked my sister and I up from school. He stayed for a while, but got a phone call from my mom. He told us Alex was in the hospital, and called a neighbor girl who was a bit older then me to babysit. He then left.

The girl (Beth) and I made cards for Alex and guessed about why he was in the hospital. I was obsessed with the Baby-sitters Club series at the time, and I guessed 'diabetes'. We both shook our heads, saying 'no, Alex won't have that'
But he did. When my dad came home to relieve Beth of her duties, he told us Alex had Type 1 diabetes. At 10 pm that night, he came home with a bag of stuff and two stuffed animals- Rufus and a big brown dog.
